It allows multiple routers to use the same virtual gateway address. This means that if one router goes down, another one takes over with the same virtual gateway address. I came across an issue with preempt, I wanted R2 as the active router without adjusting the HSRP priority. So, I assigned R2 the higher IP address. However, the problem arose when configuring R1 with and without preempt; there was no change. R2 didn&#8217;t become the active router until both routers were reloaded. This was potentially an emulation glitch. The part I circled shows that R2 is the active router while R1 is in standby. This happens because both routers have the same HSRP priority. I went ahead and entered the &#8216;reload&#8217; command on R2 while simultaneously pinging 10.10.10.1 500 times from VPC1. As you can see we had one timeout which proves R2 dropped out and R1 took over as the active router.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-17 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"553\" height=\"302\" data-id=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/bkdmr.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Part10-Troubleshooting-Preempt-copy.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bkdmr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Part10-Troubleshooting-Preempt-copy.png 553w, https:\/\/bkdmr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Part10-Troubleshooting-Preempt-copy-300x164.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned before, I faced a problem with preemption where R2 refused to become the active router. I tried configuring R1 with preemption enabled and with preemption disabled but it didn&#8217;t change anything. Despite a minor issue with preemption, the protocol switched to the other router after reboot. HSRP is both easy to configure and reliable for maintaining network connections.
